How to Build a Hashtag Set

A structured method for assembling a set that mixes breadth instead of repeating one idea thirty times.

Think in layers

A usable set has three layers. Broad tags name the general field and reach a large but distracted audience. Mid-sized topical tags name your actual subject and reach people with an active interest. Specific tags describe exactly what the post shows and reach the smallest, most relevant group.

A set made only of broad tags disappears instantly. A set made only of very specific tags reaches almost nobody. Mixing them gives each post more than one chance to find its audience.

Building the set

Write the subject in plain words first. Generate variations, then sort them roughly by how general they feel. Pick two or three from the broad layer, five or six from the middle, and four or five that are unmistakably about this specific post. Add one branded or community tag if you maintain one.

Save the result as a named collection so the next post in the same series starts from a reviewed set rather than a blank field.

Maintaining it

Review sets every couple of months. Remove tags that no longer describe what you publish, and replace any that have drifted into unrelated content. Rotating two or three variants of a set across posts also keeps the caption from looking identical every time.
