How Hashtags Work

A plain explanation of what happens when you add a hashtag, across the major platforms.

A hashtag is a link, not a magic word

When you publish a post containing #gardening, the platform turns that text into a link to a feed of other posts using the same tag, and records that your post belongs to that topic. That is the whole mechanism. Everything else — reach, recommendations, discovery — depends on how the platform's ranking system uses that membership.

Because it is a link, formatting rules matter. Spaces end a hashtag, punctuation is dropped, and a tag that is entirely numeric is usually ignored. Capitalisation does not create a separate tag: #Gardening and #gardening lead to the same feed.

Why platforms differ

Instagram and TikTok use hashtags as one input to recommendation, alongside the audio, the caption text, on-screen words and early viewer behaviour. LinkedIn uses them to route posts into topic feeds that a smaller professional audience follows. Facebook indexes them but few users browse tag feeds. Pinterest largely ignores the hash symbol and reads the descriptive words instead.

The practical consequence is that one hashtag block pasted everywhere is wrong nearly everywhere. Build a base set, then adapt its size and tone per platform.

What a hashtag cannot do

A hashtag does not make weak content perform. It places content in front of a slightly different pool of viewers; if the content does not hold them, the placement ends quickly.

It also cannot be measured from outside the platform. Any tool claiming a hashtag's popularity without a live platform API is showing you an estimate at best.
